Playing Against Gender Stereotypes
Design Research 2024
This infographic poster addresses the pervasive gender stereotypes present in toys and games, focusing on a business that creates inclusive and educational games designed to challenge players’ perceptions of gender roles. The games encourage players to evaluate characters based on their skills and abilities rather than traditional gender markers, such as whether they are a boy, girl, or physically capable. Intrigued by the historical and cultural origins of gender differences in toys, I conducted research into the evolution of these stereotypes and their impact on society. The design engages the audience by incorporating a board-game-inspired layout, allowing viewers to 'play' through the poster and experience the journey of breaking free from gender norms. At the end of the path, I highlight two games—Duelos and 7 Familias—that exemplify this approach, empowering players to challenge stereotypes and make decisions based on individual abilities.
